Affogato is an Italian dessert made by pouring freshly brewed hot espresso over a scoop of firm vanilla gelato. It is eaten immediately with a spoon, not sipped like an iced latte. A portable espresso machine can brew the coffee away from home, but the gelato still needs a freezer or suitable frozen-food cooler. This guide covers the ingredients, preparation order, limits and travel decisions.
Ingredients and proportions
For one serving, start with roughly 60–100 g vanilla gelato and 25–40 ml short espresso. These are recipe suggestions, not guaranteed machine output. Bring potable water, compatible capsules or ground coffee, a spoon, a ceramic bowl and a heat-safe espresso cup.
Keep the gelato frozen
Use a cooler suitable for frozen foods and follow the ice-cream packaging. Ordinary cool bags may not keep gelato firm. If storage has become unsafe, do not assume refreezing restores safety. Remove the scoop only when you are ready.
Prepare the machine
Charge STARLESS, check the correct coffee adapter, assemble according to its manual and fill with potable water within the marked capacity. With room-temperature water it is designed to heat to approximately 92°C in 3–4 minutes. Allow extra extraction time and use a stable surface.
Brew and serve
Place gelato in the bowl, extract espresso into a separate heat-safe cup, then pour over the scoop immediately. Do not pour very hot coffee into thin glass straight from a freezer; unsuitable glass can crack. Serve promptly before the gelato becomes liquid.
Capsules versus ground coffee
Compatible capsules simplify dosing; ground coffee offers more control over taste and grind. Neither guarantees crema. Test your exact adapter before leaving and collect used coffee in a sealed bag.
Machine capabilities and limits
STARLESS lists a 7,650 mAh battery, USB-C charging, about 728 g weight, around 80 ml capacity and up to four cups per charge under stated conditions. It does not chill gelato. The full dessert kit requires separate cold storage and utensils.
Where it works
Home is easiest. An office kitchen works if permitted and equipped with a freezer. A car-side picnic needs reliable cooling, shade and a stable table. Many hotel minibars cannot freeze gelato. Long hikes without cold storage are usually unsuitable.
| Place | Fit |
|---|---|
| Home | Good |
| Office | If freezer access |
| Picnic | With proper cooler |
| Hotel | Check freezer |
| Hike | Usually unsuitable |
Checklist and cleaning
Pack the charged machine, adapter, coffee, water, cup, bowl, spoon, cooler and waste bag. After serving, discard used coffee, let hot parts cool and clean removable parts according to the manual. Never put ice cream or milk into the machine.
Adjust the result
If the dessert is weak, use more concentrated espresso or a smaller scoop. If it melts too quickly, use firmer gelato and less coffee. Decaf espresso or dairy-free frozen dessert can work when stored properly.
